Yellowfin tuna are the number one commercial catch species in Okinawa — and one of the top targets for sport anglers on a LegaSea charter. Present year-round along the Kuroshio Current, they run in size through every season and respond well to the techniques LegaSea's captains have spent their careers perfecting.
Including one they invented.
The Ebing Rig — Born in Okinawa
The Ebing rig was developed right here in Okinawa and is now one of the most successful tuna fishing techniques across Japan. A heavy weight drops the rig to the strike zone. A hookless metal jig on a wire spreader — called a tenbin — flashes and attracts. Behind it, on a long fluorocarbon leader, a shrimp-imitating soft plastic dances in the current.
The combination is almost impossible for yellowfin to ignore. The captains at LegaSea have been running it from the beginning — on grounds they have exclusive rights to fish.
Why Okinawa Produces Yellowfin Tuna
The Kuroshio Current carries warm, nutrient-rich water directly through Okinawan waters year-round. Yellowfin tuna follow the current and concentrate around Payao structures — the private offshore FADs that only union-certified LegaSea captains can legally fish.
Before Payaos were introduced in Okinawan waters in 1984, annual catches were a fraction of what they are today. The structures changed the fishery. The union access system protects it. LegaSea's captains operate at the center of both.
Best Season for Yellowfin Tuna in Okinawa
Yellowfin tuna are present and fishable year-round in Okinawa. Summer is a productive window for numbers around Payao structures, with juvenile fish active and feeding. Autumn is the highlighted season for larger fish — as the current shifts, bigger yellowfin push through and the bite picks up significantly. If size is the priority, September through November is the window to target.
